Emergencies don’t come with a warning. Whether you remain in your home or you have to leave in a moment’s notice, are you prepared? You may think you are ready. You have planned for this possibility, but, do you have everything you need in your B.O.B. (bug out bag)? Do you have enough items in your medicine cabinet? Have you included essential oils?

Some of you may say, I don’t need essential oils. You might want to reconsider adding some to your bag and medicine cabinet. Essential oils have many qualities you may not have taken into consideration.

Depending on the type of emergency, having essential oils on hand can be a valuable resource for your family. During storms, hurricanes, floods, fires, or any other natural or man-made disaster, you may be on your own. The first responders can’t be everywhere for everyone. You can take responsibility for your family and feel a little more secure.

I have been using essential oils for some years now and I am still amazed at what they can do. These little bottles of nature contain many powerful chemical compounds. These compounds are very potent concentrations from plants. Plants vary from season to season and therefore their make-up varies slightly. This is one of the reasons you are less to become resistant to their affects. You do not have to use more and more oils to receive the benefits they offer. This is much different from prescription drugs where people need to keep increasing their dosages for the same effect. The essential oils are less likely to build up in your body like prescription drugs can. They are natural substances not synthetic compounds. This fact alone is pretty impressive. Why try to duplicate nature when you can have the pure non chemical version?

There are so many pure essential oils to choose from it can be intimidating. Essential oils are not all created the same. This is one fact that is extremely important to realize. I have seen ads for essential oils at incredibly low prices. It would be impossible to offer truly pure essential oils for the prices being advertised. One of the most expensive essential oils, perhaps the most expensive essential oil, is Rose. It takes 5,000 pounds of rose petals to produce 1 kilogram of Rose essential oil. This is the reason Rose essential oil is VERY expensive. It sells for approximately $165 for a 5 ml. bottle. This isn’t an oil that many people can buy. I have seen this oil advertised for less than $10. It would be impossible to be a pure unadulterated essential oil at this price. It must be a rose fragrance, which is completely different, or it is a synthetic knockoff, neither of which you want. This is an extreme example but worth noting.

Essential oils are actually VERY cost effective. There are approximately 85 drops in a 5 ml. bottle of essential oil and approximately 250 drops in a 15 ml. bottle of essential oil. Since you only need a drop or two, the oils will last a good amount of time.

Top 7 Oils to have in your B.O.B.

  • Lavender – This essential oil is great for burns, calming the mind, relieving itching from bug bites (You might get lots of insect bites in your bug-out situation.), allergy relief, helping splinters back out of the skin, headaches, sleeping, and for skin conditions.
  • Peppermint – This essential oil may help with nausea, stomach upsets, relieving headaches, reducing fever, allergy relief, diarrhea, heartburn, and acid reflux. It also will cause ticks to back out of the skin which could be very important with the tick problem across the country.
  • Lemon – This essential oil has great sanitizing properties. It may help with allergies, cough relief and can be mixed with Melaleuca (Tea Tree) oil and water to be used as a hand sanitizer, just shake and spray. It is also a wonderful disinfectant for cleaning.
  • Melaleuca (Tea Tree) – This essential oil is a great antiseptic, it may help with bug bites, wounds, fungal and bacterial infections such as Athlete’s food, aid the immune system, may be helpful for congestion and other cold symptoms, ear aches (DO NOT put in ear canal, just rub a drop around the ear but not down the ear canal.), great for dandruff, and has been used for fungus and ringworm.
  • Frankincense – This essential oil holds a special place. It is known as the go-to oil, when in doubt, use Frankincense. It is great for the skin, has shown significant results in cancer studies, reduces inflammation, promotes healing, and is great for relieving stress and anxiety. In a stressful bug-out situation you can put a couple drops of Frankincense on your hands, rub them together and inhale for an on the go aromatherapy session. There are several studies on this awesome essential oil and it ranks as a top one to own and use.
  • Oregano – This essential oil is a great antibiotic. It is considered a “hot” oil which means you need to dilute it more than other oils with a carrier oil. A carrier oil is simply an oil used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. A good ratio to work with is 1 drop of oregano essential oil to an ounce of carrier. Carrier oils help move the oils around the skin for easier distribution. You can use coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil or any vegetable oil.
  • Rosemary – This is another essential oil that helps those achy muscles and arthritis. It offers a number of benefits that you may need while bugging out or bugging in. It can also be used to aid with congestion, allergies, sore throats and headaches. I love the smell of this essential oil. You just apply it directly to the skin.

Stocking up on these essential oils would give you a nice group of essential oils that would help with a number of different things you might encounter during your emergency in situation. The oils are very easy to use. As a quick reference point, this is how they can be utilized:

ALWAYS DILUTE ESSENTIAL OILS WHEN APPLYING TOPICALLY unless advised by a clinically trained professional.

Apply to the areas that need attention or to the bottom of the feet. The feet have large pores and allow for quick penetration through the cell walls for faster results.

You can never be sure what life holds for anyone in the future. The saying, “Prepare for the worst and hope for the best”, certainly seems to be in the forefront of many people today. We may not know what is down the road but we can make a slow progress to leading a prepared and more self-sufficient life. Being prepared is like making your own insurance policy, if the time comes it will pay off.

    I have never used essential oils before, but I will be considering to try them. I need to research them. They sound like a better alternative to medication. I always get headaches and the lavender and peppermint oils sound very enticing. I will be pinning this article to use as research. Thanks for always posting things that we, the general public, typically do not think of!
